Genealogy 101: Choose an Interview Method

Interviews with family members can be conducted in a variety of methods. The chosen method can be determined by how well you know the family member, your comfort level with the method and where you live. When audio taping an interview, start by stating the interviewee's name, your name, date, and the relationship.
  • The Personal Interview: Personal interviews are the best method where possible. Personal interviews can be informal or formal. Family reunions and holiday family gatherings are the perfect opportunity for informal interviews. Formal interviews should be scheduled ahead of time. Audio recorders can be used where/when appropriate.

  • Telephone Interview: Sometimes it is not possible to visit with your relative in person, if this is the case telephone interviews work best. Be polite, and willing to arrange a future call if your timing is bad.

  • Letter Writing: This may be the best method when contacting a relative you do not know very well, or those for whom you do not have a telephone number. Be sure to clearly state who you are, what you are seeking and offer an alternative contact method where appropriate.

  • E-mail: E-mail is also an option. Relatives can respond at their leisure, plus photos and scanned copies of family records can be sent electronically via an e-mail attachment.
