Genealogy 101: Follow General Interview Guidelines

Regardless of who you are interviewing, there are a few general tips to keep in mind. The following will help you make the most of your time:
Leave the door open for future correspondence.
  • Prepare a list of questions prior to the interview.
  • Use open-ended questions.
  • Listen to responses. Do not interrupt.
  • Take notes. Use audio recorders where appropriate.
  • Ask follow-up questions. Stray from your list of questions when needed.
  • Be considerate. Some sensitive issues may bring back memories. If the interviewee does want to answer, don't press.
  • Set a general time limit. One to two hours is about right for most interviews.
  • Be courteous. Write a thank-you note, and offer to share what you find.
